Each chapter includes open-ended and short-answer comprehension questions with an answer key. This response packet can be used for whole group discussion or instruction, but it works great in literature circles, to hold group members accountable for reading and discussing the text. It can also be used as a homework assignment, for small group instruction, book clubs, etc. Graphic Organizers: character Analysis, text-to-text connections, compare and contrast, character change, and sensory language *** Vocabulary Study: This vocabulary study provides vocabulary activities and quizzes for words that appear in the novel. *** Figurative Language Study: The figurative language study provides an abundance of figurative language examples from the novel that students can analyze. This resource includes figurative language posters (with definitions, why authors use them, examples, & non-examples) for simile, metaphor, personification, idiom, and hyperbole. Students will also conduct research on a chosen natural disaster’s effects and use art to communicate what they discover and its impact on people, the environment, and other living things. Furthermore, students will make connections between ideas like the golden ratio, fractal spirals, the Fibonacci number sequence, and Pi as they build a Pi skyline. They will design and build a mock levee, a hurricane-resistant building, and an anemometer to gauge wind speeds. This Resource Includes: Who Was Johannes Vermeer?: A short biography about Vermeer that includes reader response questions.* Reader Response Journal: This reader response journal is divided into 5 sections by chapters. Each section includes 1-2 pages of vocabulary practice and 1-2 pages of short answer comprehension questions, and a 4 page final assessment that is mixed with multiple choice questions and short answer questions. Not only can this literature response packet be used for whole group discussion / instruction, but it works great in literature circles, to hold group members accountable for reading and discussing the text.
